How do you teach a child to give back?

As a Mom I am constantly reevaluating what I am teaching my children. Am I teaching them what is truly important? Do they know how to be giving and compassionate towards others? I have had a fun time teaching both of my boys the important lessons in life. The one lesson that was difficult for them to grasp was giving. Part of giving is sharing with those less fortunate. There are many ways to do this. Here is how I chose to teach them how to give.

We always give around the Christmas holiday. They purchase a present that they would want to receive; they wrap it and deliver it to a local Children’s home. When my children were young this was no easy feat but as they grew so did their ability to give. Their ability to be thankful for the things they have also grew. My children now enjoy the tradition and have even urged their friends to join them. I firmly believe that I set an example for my children by my own giving. “Do as I say, not as I do,” is not really appropriate in my experience with children. They always end up doing as you do.

Of course that was how we chose to help but you can give in so many different ways. There are plenty of places in need of volunteers; You could donate your gently used items or non-perishable food as well. You can always have your children get involved with our Mission and they will be helping other children receive the life saving care they need for this holiday season. They can purchase a HuggaBear, donate online or send in a prayer request. We hope every child learns the importance of giving, unselfishness and compassion. Think of what a wonderful world it would be if that lesson was achieved by everyone.
