Farther & Farther

I just recently read an article in USA Today by Cathy Lynn Grossman entitled “72% of Millennials ‘more spiritual than religious.’” What does that even mean?
The Millennial generation is my generation and it saddens me to see what we have become. To be more spiritual rather than religious is a ridiculous concept that a lot of people I know have chosen to believe. They practice meditation, go to psychics, do things that make them feel “more spiritual.” Still they are so far from God. To my generation, God has become this supernatural being that just floats around the earth, makes flowers grow, and does nice things every once and awhile. Poppycock! My generation has become so deceived that they have no idea what the Truth is.

The ironic thing about it all is that the youth of this nation are searching. They know that there is something missing in their lives, but they are too blind to see it. The Bible says that “God has set eternity in the hearts of men.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) God placed something in us that would motivate us to search for Him.
He has placed in us a curiosity about the life after the grave. “What will happen to me after I die?” This is a common thing for people to think. However, my generation has begun to think that they are immortal – that nothing will stop them. Although, their actions speak of their indifferent emotions towards life after death, their soul is crying out for God. When they lie in their beds at night they hear the questions of eternity and of “a god,” but they are silenced from their bondage to fear; afraid to change and afraid of the unknown. In order to ignore their fear, they reassure themselves that they are doing something, by being “spiritual.” They are choosing to stay in deception to avoid the confrontation of the future.
Ultimately in the end, we all have lost so much because we have let fear control us. We are afraid to change and afraid of what is to come. Therefore we miss out on many opportunities, namely a relationship with God.

Honestly, I’m not shocked by the statistics. I used to be the 72% majority as well. At the end of the day, I know that I cannot argue someone into the Kingdom of God, so I pray.

God, have mercy on this generation! We are so distant from You, and we have placed anything and everything above You. Forgive us! Heal this nation!

Jeremiah 33:6-8
“'Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.'”
